In My Room

Today for NaPoWriMo the prompt challenged us to write a parody of a song or poem. I chose the song "On My Own" from Les Miserables. Despite choosing the song for a parody, I really do enjoy "On My Own." You can listen to the song here. I hope you like my poem. It sounds best when sung to the music it parodies.

In My Room
By Candace Shultz

In my room
Hiding from the children
I consume
A giant bar of chocolate
Without them
I can savor all the chocolate
But when I take a bite I hear the door
And they have found me.

In my room the children stare right at me
Then their eyes look at what I'm holding
In the lamplight, the chocolate looks delicious
And all I see is them and then my chocolate gone forever

It is only a matter of some time
Before my children will ask to eat the chocolate
And although I want to be so selfish
I will say, it's okay for them

I love them
But when a minute's over
It is gone
My chocolate's just a wrapper
Without it
The world is less delicious
I'm still hungry and the children
Have chocolate on their faces

I love them
But I just want my chocolate
All their lives
I've had to share my chocolate
Without it
My life will keep on going
But a world without some chocolate
Is one I've never known

I want it

I want it

I'll eat it

But only in my room

  1. WOW. As a chocolate lover and Les Mis lover, I am overcome. The drama of the song is made for the emotional intensity of the solo chocolate bar experience.

  3. Wonderful! I had so much trouble with this prompt -- partly because I can't write "funny". But also because I've had a lot of stress this year (way more than last year, when the lockdown first happened, and I got 38 poems done in 31 days including the early bird prompt).

    1. Thank you. I did have fun with this poem, though I've definitely struggled on other days with other prompts. I don't always follow the prompt if it doesn't work for me. And some days I've written haiku poetry when I couldn't think of anything else to write. We just need to keep trying.

I'm sorry that you've had a stressful year, but I hope it gets better. And congratulations on doing 38 poems last year!

  9. Lovely poem and so relatable. I remember writing a poem on chocolate too years ago and it too had a line of not wanting to share it with children. Happy to know there are moms like me around. Congratulations on being featured!
