Incandescent

You can find today's NaPoWriMo prompt here, but basically I had to choose one word out of a list of ten words to use as the title for my poem. I chose the word incandescent. My poem is a haiku.

At the end of day
when the sun's incandescence
disappears, I sleep

Haiku

There's no space for me
with these cacophonous sounds
bouncing off the walls.

Thunderstorm

 Thunder booms, rumbling
footsteps hurry, and lightning
reveals a scared face.

In a Lull

 No inspiration
today, just a rocking chair
lulling me to sleep.

Haiku Poetry Day

April 17 is International Haiku Poetry Day, so I wanted to share a haiku I wrote today.

Swaying side to side
Flowers in a gentle breeze
Baby falls asleep

Shine Bright

Shine Bright
By Candace Shultz

You should shine so bright
that when the dark clouds block you,
they can't dim your light.

The rain won't stop you
from dancing and soaring high.
Be a butterfly.

Spread your wings and fly.
Be bold and be beautiful
and always be you.

A Halo of Light

I wrote a second poem today! This one just came to me after I wrote my triolet. This poem has four stanzas, and each stanza is a haiku.

A Halo of Light
By Candace Shultz

The darkness has come
There's no star, no moon, no light
I can't find my way

A glimmer of hope
A shooting star and a wish
My hand reaches high

Your hands hold on tight
A feeling of joy and peace
A halo of light

The sun has risen
It shines and radiates love
And fills me with life

Queen Apple

The prompt today for NaPoWriMo challenged me to anthropomorphize a food in my poem, so I decided to write a haiku from the point of view of an apple.

I am beautiful.

I am round and clothed in red.

Treat me like a queen.

Sleep

I am so excited! My poem from yesterday, "There's a Mouse Inside My House," was featured on NaPoWriMo.net today! I had a lot of fun writing that poem, especially using the Skeltonic verse. I feel so honored and grateful to be a featured poet.

Now, for today's prompt we are to write a poem involving the moon. Today is also National Haiku Poetry Day, so I decided to write a haiku involving the moon.

Sleep

The new moon beckons.

My eyes drift closed in full dark.

Sleep invites me in.

How to Write a Haiku

Today's NaPoWriMo prompt is to write poetry in the form of a to-do list of an unusual character/person. I decided to try the to-do list form, but I opted out of using an unusual character.

How to Write a Haiku
By Candace Shultz

  • Eat breakfast
  • Drink coffee
  • Write a poem
  • Stare at a blank page for twenty minutes
  • Fall asleep
  • Wake up
  • Play Dr. Mario
  • Watch Netflix
  • Try to write a poem again
  • Scratch out words with a pen
  • Eat lunch
  • Pay the bills
  • Scroll through Facebook
  • Attempt poetry for a third time
  • Write a few lines
  • Read it
  • Hate it
  • Erase it
  • Then write a haiku
Writing eludes me.

Or is it the other way?

I escape writing.

Haiku for You

An orange flower
Shows beauty when opening
Its petals of wild.

When the sun dips down,
the night sky glistens with stars
and a cool breeze blows.

A butterfly flits
across the field and lands on
a tall blade of grass
